Matthäus Merian’s Colmaria (1644) is an exquisitely detailed engraved view of the Alsatian city of Colmar, part of his monumental topographical series Topographia Alsatiae. Executed in Merian’s characteristic bird’s-eye perspective, the print captures the city’s distinctive medieval fabric at a time when it was part of the Holy Roman Empire, just before the end of the Thirty Years’ War. The composition presents Colmar surrounded by its defensive walls and moat, with the Lauch River meandering through the urban core and the Vosges Mountains rising faintly in the distance.
Merian’s engraving is both an artistic and documentary achievement. The city’s principal landmarks are rendered with architectural precision: the Gothic spire of Saint Martin’s Church dominates the skyline; nearby, the Dominican church and convent are clearly visible, along with the orderly streets, gabled houses, and market squares that defined Colmar’s character. The coat of arms, elegant title cartouche, and legend at the bottom of the print reflect Merian’s combination of scientific observation and Baroque decorative sensibility.
As with other works in Merian’s Topographia Germaniae series, Colmaria served not only as a visual record but also as a statement of civic pride and imperial geography. The image would have circulated among scholars, collectors, and travelers, offering a glimpse of a prosperous imperial free city recovering from decades of religious and political upheaval.
Today, Colmaria stands as one of the most valuable early modern visual sources for understanding Colmar’s 17th-century urban form. Merian’s meticulous engraving preserves details of the townscape that have since disappeared, making it an indispensable reference for historians, cartographers, and admirers of early modern printmaking alike.
