Willem Janszoon Blaeu was a Dutch cartographer and mapmaker who lived during the 16th and 17th centuries. He was a prominent figure in the Golden Age of Dutch cartography and is known for his contributions to the field of mapmaking. One of his notable works is the map titled "Persia Sive Sophorum Regnum," which was published in 1634.

The map "Persia Sive Sophorum Regnum" is a historical map of the region known as Persia, which corresponds roughly to modern-day Iran. During the 17th century, Persia was a significant and influential empire, and its geography and political boundaries were of great interest to European cartographers and traders.

Blaeu's map would have provided valuable information about the Persian Empire, including its cities, rivers, mountains, and other geographical features. It would have also depicted the political divisions and territories within the empire. Maps like these were essential tools for European powers involved in trade and diplomacy with distant regions.

Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638) was a Dutch cartographer, globemaker, and publisher who played a significant role in the history of cartography during the Dutch Golden Age. He was born in Alkmaar, Netherlands, and went on to become one of the most prominent and influential mapmakers of his era.

Blaeu was born into a family of herring merchants but developed an interest in mathematics and astronomy. He studied under the renowned Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. In 1599, Blaeu set up a workshop in Amsterdam for producing globes and scientific instruments. He later expanded his business to include mapmaking.

Blaeu is best known for his atlas publications. His major work, "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" (Theater of the World), was first published in 1635. This atlas was one of the most comprehensive and beautifully illustrated atlases of its time. He was known for the exceptional quality of his maps and atlases. He used high-quality paper, elaborate decorative elements, and accurate cartographic information. His maps were often hand-colored and finely detailed.

He produced world maps that were highly regarded for their accuracy and detail. His maps of the known world were considered among the best available in the 17th century. Blaeu's map and atlas production business was highly successful, and his maps and atlases were exported throughout Europe. He had a prominent role in making Amsterdam a leading center for map publishing.

After Willem Janszoon Blaeu's death in 1638, his work was continued by his son, Joan Blaeu. Joan went on to become a renowned cartographer in his own right and continued the family's mapmaking tradition.
