Matthäus Merian’s Civitas S. Dominici in Hispaniola (1646) is one of the earliest widely circulated European engraved views of Santo Domingo, capital of the Spanish colony on the island of Hispaniola and the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the Americas. Issued in Frankfurt as part of Merian’s monumental Topographia series, the view illustrates the city at a time when it remained a key administrative, ecclesiastical, and maritime center of the Spanish Caribbean.

Presented from an elevated perspective across the Río Ozama, the engraving captures Santo Domingo’s fortified urban core, surrounded by robust defensive walls, angular bastions, and shoreline batteries—structures built to protect the city against corsairs and rival European powers. The harbor, still one of the busiest in the region during the mid-17th century, is depicted with sailing vessels and open sea channels that emphasize its long-standing importance within the transatlantic trade network.

Merian’s fine, linear engraving technique reveals a dense cluster of civic and religious buildings. Notable among them is the Catedral Primada de América, the first cathedral in the New World, shown prominently within the orderly grid of streets. Convents, monasteries, administrative headquarters, and military buildings reflect both the city’s spiritual authority and its political centrality within Spain’s earliest American dominions.

In the foreground, small ships, vegetation, and occasional figures enliven the composition, while a floating Latin title ribbon identifies the city with characteristic Merian elegance. The combination of accurate topographical detail and refined Baroque engraving makes this view both an artistic object and a vital historical document.
