Peter Schenk (1660-1718) was a Dutch engraver and cartographer. He was known for his work in creating detailed maps and engravings, particularly in the field of geography. One of his notable works is the map titled "Diversa orbis Terrae visu incedente per coluros Tropicorum ambos ejus polos," which translates to "Different views of the Earth as it revolves through the colures of the Tropics, both of its poles."
This map depicted the Earth from various perspectives, showing the movement of the Earth as it orbits the sun. The colures of the Tropics refer to the two imaginary lines that mark the northern and southern limits of the sun's rays during the summer solstice. The map likely showcased different seasons and the effects of the sun's position on the Earth's surface.
Schenk's maps and engravings were highly regarded for their accuracy and artistic quality during his time. They provided valuable geographical information and were often used for educational and decorative purposes.
Peter Schenk was born in Elberfeld, Germany, and later settled in Amsterdam, where he established himself as a successful mapmaker. Schenk specialized in producing maps, atlases, and prints during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
Peter Schenk was part of a prominent family of cartographers, and he collaborated with his brother-in-law, Gerard Valk, who was also a cartographer. Together, they created numerous maps and atlases that gained popularity throughout Europe. Their works often featured detailed and decorative elements, making them highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
Some of Schenk's notable works include "Hecatompolis," a series of 100 views of cities from around the world, as well as maps of continents, countries, and regions. He was known for his expertise in engraving and his ability to create intricate and aesthetically pleasing maps. Schenk's maps were highly regarded for their accuracy and quality, and they played a significant role in advancing cartography during his time.
Overall, Peter Schenk's contributions to cartography and his artistic skills as an engraver have cemented his place as an important figure in the history of mapmaking.
