Antique Geographic Spherical World Map, 1760
Jean Lattre (also known as Jean Lattré) was a French geographer, engraver, and map publisher who operated in Paris during the 18th century. He was active from the mid-18th century to the early 19th century and was known for producing a wide range of maps, atlases, and globes.
One of Lattre's notable works is the "Mappe-Monde Geo Spherique," which translates to "Geographic Spherical World Map" in English. This map was designed to represent the world on a spherical projection, providing a more accurate depiction of the Earth's surface compared to earlier flat maps. The "Mappe-Monde Geo Spherique" aimed to show the continents, countries, oceans, and other geographical features in a visually appealing and informative manner.
Lattre's map would have included various cartographic elements such as political boundaries, cities, rivers, mountains, and perhaps even exploratory routes taken by famous voyagers of the time. It would have been designed to be both educational and decorative, serving as a valuable tool for geographers, explorers, and enthusiasts.
Lattre's works, including the "Mappe-Monde Geo Spherique," were often based on earlier maps and atlases by renowned cartographers such as Guillaume de l'Isle and Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville. Lattre would modify and update these sources to produce his own maps, which were well-regarded for their accuracy and detail.
Overall, Jean Lattre's contributions to cartography, particularly his "Mappe-Monde Geo Spherique," played a role in the development and dissemination of accurate and aesthetically pleasing maps during the 18th century. His works are appreciated today for their historical significance and artistic value.
