John William Norie (1772-1843) was a renowned English hydrographer, cartographer, and publisher. He was a prolific figure in the field of maritime navigation and chart-making during the 19th century. "A New Chart of the China Sea, and East India Archipelago, Comprehending the Sunda Molucca & Phillippine Islands in which are exhibited the Various Straits and Passages to Canton, and between the Indian and Pacific Oceans" is one of Norie's notable works. This chart, published in 1821, presented detailed and accurate geographical information about the regions mentioned in its title. It focused on areas of the South China Sea, the East Indies, the Sunda Strait, the Molucca Islands, the Philippine Islands, and the passages leading to Canton (now Guangzhou), a prominent Chinese port.
