This 1941 Bordeaux wine map presents a detailed wartime-era depiction of the Graves region, including Graves Supérieures and the commune of Cérons. Produced during a period of profound uncertainty in France, the map stands as a testament to the enduring structure and identity of Bordeaux’s viticultural landscape. Even amid disruption, the delineation of terroir, property, and appellation remained central to the region’s cultural and economic foundation.
Stretching south of the city of Bordeaux along the left bank of the Garonne River, Graves is historically defined by its distinctive gravel soils—deposits carried by ancient river systems and prized for their drainage capacity and thermal retention. The map carefully outlines communal boundaries and vineyard distributions, illustrating how the appellation extends in a narrow band parallel to the river. Graves Supérieures, historically associated with sweet white wines, is distinctly identified, emphasizing its specialized production zones.
Cérons appears prominently along the Garonne, positioned between Barsac and the broader Graves area. Its proximity to the river is clearly marked, highlighting the climatic interplay of mist and sunlight essential to the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which defines its dessert wines. Soil variations are subtly indicated, reinforcing the geological continuity that links Graves, Graves Supérieures, and Cérons.
Typography is disciplined and precise, characteristic of early 1940s French cartographic production. Roads, villages, and estate names are methodically recorded, underscoring commercial organization and territorial clarity.
