Old map of Palestine, Holy Land, 1945, (matte photo paper print, 57 cm x 40 cm)
Edwin Sundberg, an American cartographer, crafted a significant map of Palestine in 1945 under the title "Palestine Land of Strife." This cartographic representation encompasses the stretch from Sidon to the Dead Sea and extends from the Mediterranean to Damascus. Within its intricate details, cities, towns, and a network of modern highways interlink numerous key population centers.
This cartographic work emerged during a period marked by intense political and social turbulence in Palestine. The British, who had overseen Mandatory Palestine since 1922, found themselves grappling with mounting pressures from both the Jewish and Arab communities. The Jewish faction ardently advocated for the establishment of a Jewish state, while the Arab population vehemently opposed any form of partition within Palestine.
The map adeptly mirrors the palpable tensions saturating Palestine during that era. Its evocative title, "Palestine Land of Strife," starkly underscores the burgeoning conflict between these two communities. Notably, the map delineates the distinct regions within Palestine predominantly inhabited by either Jewish or Arab populations.
Published in 1945, this map surfaced mere months before the pivotal United Nations vote on the partition of Palestine into two separate states—one Jewish and the other Arab. Regrettably, the Arab community rejected this partition proposal, subsequently triggering a surge of violence within Palestine. In 1948, the British withdrew from Palestine, leading to the proclamation of the State of Israel.
