The Strasbourg, France map by E. H. Cordier and Willy Fischer, created in 1950, is a charming pictorial depiction of the historic city of Strasbourg. Designed with both artistry and functionality in mind, this map captures the cultural vibrancy and architectural heritage of one of France's most iconic cities, located at the crossroads of French and German influences in the Alsace region.
The map provides a detailed bird’s-eye view of Strasbourg, highlighting its distinctive blend of medieval and Renaissance architecture. At its heart is the magnificent Strasbourg Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame), with its intricate Gothic spire towering above the surrounding cityscape. The nearby Grande Île, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is depicted with its maze of canals, half-timbered houses, and picturesque bridges that define the city’s old town.
Cordier and Fischer enrich the map with vibrant illustrations of local landmarks, including the historic Palais Rohan, Maison Kammerzell, and the Barrage Vauban, a 17th-century defensive structure. The University of Strasbourg and other key institutions are also marked, emphasizing the city’s role as an intellectual and cultural center.
Surrounding the urban core, the map features the lush green spaces of the Orangerie Park and the European Quarter, hinting at Strasbourg’s emerging importance in post-war European diplomacy, particularly as the seat of the Council of Europe and later the European Parliament.
Decorative elements such as playful vignettes of Alsatian traditions, including wine-making and folklore, add a regional touch, while clear labeling and a border adorned with local motifs complete the design.
This map reflects the optimism of the post-war era, celebrating Strasbourg’s resilience and its rich cultural heritage. Today, it is a treasured artifact for collectors, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the city as it flourished in the mid-20th century.
