The Women of Algiers, Version O (1955) is the final and most complex painting in Pablo Picasso’s celebrated fifteen-part series Les Femmes d’Alger (1954–1955). Conceived as a sustained dialogue with Eugène Delacroix’s 1834 Romantic masterpiece Women of Algiers in Their Apartment, the series allowed Picasso to revisit a canonical work of Western art while asserting the expressive freedom of his late style.
Version O represents the culmination of the cycle’s formal and conceptual evolution. The composition is densely packed with interlocking figures, angular planes, and vivid color contrasts, pushing Cubist fragmentation to an extreme while retaining the recognizable motif of reclining and seated female nudes within an interior. The women’s bodies dissolve into a complex lattice of shapes, lines, and patterns, creating a pulsating surface in which foreground and background collapse into a single, dynamic field.
Color plays a central role in the painting’s impact. Picasso employs saturated reds, blues, yellows, and blacks, arranged in rhythmic sequences that echo both Islamic decorative traditions and the chromatic intensity of Henri Matisse, whose death in 1954 deeply affected Picasso. The work also reflects Picasso’s personal life: the features of Jacqueline Roque, his companion and later wife, recur throughout the series, lending an intimate dimension to the otherwise historical subject.
Version O synthesizes the entire cycle, incorporating elements explored individually in earlier versions. It is widely regarded as one of Picasso’s greatest late masterpieces, exemplifying his ability to absorb, transform, and surpass art-historical precedents. Today, the painting stands as a landmark of postwar modernism, embodying Picasso’s relentless reinvention and his enduring dialogue with the past.
