In 1837, the University of Oxford was a prestigious institution deeply rooted in tradition, with a city plan that reflected its long history and academic prominence. The University itself was not a single unified campus, but rather a collection of colleges and institutions scattered throughout the city, each with its own distinctive architectural style and design. The university's layout mirrored Oxford’s medieval and post-medieval growth, with narrow, winding streets, ancient stone buildings, and college courtyards.

The city of Oxford, in 1837, had evolved from its Roman origins and medieval past into a vibrant center of intellectual life, with a population just over 40,000. The streets surrounding the colleges were compact and labyrinthine, designed for pedestrian access rather than vehicular traffic, which suited the academic and religious life that characterized the city. Buildings were primarily constructed from local limestone, giving the city a cohesive and timeless aesthetic.

At the heart of the University was the Radcliffe Camera, completed in 1749, serving as a central library, and it was one of the iconic architectural landmarks that defined the cityscape. The Bodleian Library, which was expanding during the 19th century, also played a central role in the scholarly life of the university. The colleges themselves—such as Balliol, Magdalen, and Exeter—were dotted around the city center and often had their own quadrangles, gardens, and chapel buildings, forming their own small, almost self-contained communities.

The city was still largely defined by its medieval street patterns, which did not change much until later in the 19th century. Oxford's focus remained on education, with the university's architecture, streets, and spaces fostering an environment for both study and scholarly debate, all within the context of a city that had stood for centuries as a symbol of academic excellence.
