"Geo-Hydrographic World Map, or General Description of the Terrestrial and Aquatic Globe in Two Hemisphere Maps." This map was created by Cornelis Mortier, a renowned Dutch cartographer, in the late 17th century.
The map consists of two hemispheres, representing the entire Earth. It provides a comprehensive depiction of both the terrestrial (land) and aquatic (water) aspects of the globe. The map is designed to showcase the geography and hydrography of the world, including continents, countries, oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, and other prominent features.
Cornelis Mortier's map is known for its intricate details and artistic craftsmanship. It was created during a period of great exploration and discovery, so it incorporates the geographical knowledge available at that time. The map reflects the understanding of the world during the late 17th century, including the prevailing theories and misconceptions of the era.
The map is likely to include decorative elements such as ornate borders, cartouches, and illustrations of mythical creatures or explorers. It would have been a valuable tool for sailors, navigators, and geographers of the time, providing them with a visual representation of the known world.
Cornelis Mortier (1658-1711) was a prominent Dutch publisher and engraver based in Amsterdam during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He hailed from a family of publishers and mapmakers, with his father, Pierre Mortier, and uncle, David Mortier, also being well-known figures in the publishing industry.
Cornelis Mortier continued the family business and established himself as a successful publisher and seller of maps, atlases, and prints. He collaborated with renowned cartographers and engravers of the time to produce high-quality maps that were highly sought after by scholars, collectors, and navigators.
Mortier's publications often featured detailed and aesthetically pleasing maps, and he was known for his expertise in producing large and decorative wall maps. His works covered a wide range of subjects, including world maps, celestial maps, regional maps, and city plans. He also published atlases that compiled maps from various cartographers, including the notable works of Nicolas Sanson and Alexis-Hubert Jaillot.
In addition to his cartographic endeavors, Mortier also ventured into other areas of publishing, including books, scientific works, and historical prints. His publishing house, known as Mortier, Covens & Son, continued to thrive after his death, with subsequent generations of the family carrying on the business.
