This map by Jean-Baptiste Nolin, titled Le Royaume de Dalmacie, Divisé en ses Comtez, Territoires etc. La Morlaquie, et la Bosnie (1689), is a fine example of late seventeenth-century French cartography shaped by both scientific ambition and geopolitical interest. Centered on the eastern Adriatic, the map presents the Kingdom of Dalmatia in detail, extending inland to include Morlachia and Bosnia, regions that lay at the contested frontier between Venetian, Habsburg, and Ottoman spheres of power.
The Dalmatian coastline is meticulously drawn, with its complex archipelago of islands carefully differentiated, underscoring the maritime importance of the Adriatic and Venice’s long-standing influence in the region. Inland, the terrain is conveyed through dense pictorial mountain ranges, emphasizing the rugged geography that defined political borders and limited communication. Rivers, towns, fortresses, and regional divisions are clearly labeled, offering a layered view of both natural and administrative landscapes.
Nolin’s map is as decorative as it is informative. Elegant cartouches, heraldic emblems, and allegorical figures frame the composition, reflecting the Baroque aesthetic typical of Parisian mapmaking in the reign of Louis XIV. The use of fine engraving, balanced typography, and subtle hand coloring enhances legibility while reinforcing the prestige of the map as a luxury object.
Produced in 1689, amid renewed conflict between the Ottoman Empire and European powers, the map also functions as a political document. It visualizes zones of control and cultural distinction, making it a valuable historical record of southeastern Europe at a moment of shifting boundaries and strategic uncertainty.
