Petrus Plancius was a Flemish-Dutch cartographer, astronomer, and clergyman who lived from 1552 to 1622. He was known for his contributions to cartography during the Dutch Golden Age. Plancius was involved in the creation of numerous world maps, globes, and navigational charts.

One of his notable works is the 1594 double hemisphere world map. This map, titled "Nova et exacta Terrarum Tabula geographica et hydrographica," depicted the world in two hemispheres. Plancius based his map on the discoveries and observations made by various explorers and navigators of his time.

The map featured various geographical elements such as continents, countries, cities, rivers, mountains, and oceans. Plancius included illustrations of ships and sea monsters in the surrounding oceans, which was a common practice in cartography during that era.

Plancius' double hemisphere world map also incorporated elements of celestial cartography. It depicted the constellations and zodiac signs in the outer borders of the map, connecting the terrestrial and celestial spheres.

This map was significant for its accurate representation of the known world at that time. It contributed to the dissemination of geographic knowledge and aided explorers and sailors in their voyages of discovery.

Today, original copies of Plancius' 1594 double hemisphere world map can be found in various museums and private collections around the world. These maps serve as historical artifacts and provide insights into the geographical understanding of the Renaissance period.
