Ancient view of Troye and Chaalons en Champaigne, 1638

Matthäus Merian’s Troye and Chaalons en Champaigne, published in 1638, presents two important cities of the historic French province of Champagne: Troyes and Châlons-en-Champagne. Produced during the seventeenth century as part of Merian’s celebrated program of European topographical views, the engraving combines detailed urban representation with the historical and geographical character of one of France’s most important regions.

Troyes, shown prominently in the composition, was an ancient city and an important commercial center. Located on the Seine River, it became particularly prosperous during the great medieval Champagne fairs, which attracted merchants from across Europe. By Merian’s time, Troyes was renowned for its Gothic churches, textile production, commerce, and distinctive urban architecture. Châlons-en-Champagne, historically known as Châlons-sur-Marne, was another strategically situated city in the region.
