Assisi Città dello Stato Pontificio is a finely engraved eighteenth-century view of the historic town of Assisi, created by the Italian cartographer and engraver Cesare Orlandi in 1772. Produced during the period when Assisi formed part of the Papal States, the work serves as both a topographical record and an artistic celebration of one of Italy’s most revered religious centers.
The engraving presents Assisi from an elevated vantage point, revealing the town’s distinctive position along the slopes of Mount Subasio. The composition carefully depicts the dense arrangement of buildings, churches, monasteries, and defensive walls that characterized the medieval city. Streets and architectural landmarks are rendered with remarkable precision, providing viewers with a detailed understanding of the urban landscape during the late eighteenth century.
Particular prominence is given to the religious monuments that made Assisi famous throughout Europe. Most notable is the magnificent Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, whose imposing structure dominates the cityscape. The basilica, built in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, had long been a major destination for pilgrims and travelers. Other churches, convents, and ecclesiastical buildings reinforce the city’s identity as a spiritual center within the Papal States.
Beyond its architectural detail, the engraving captures the surrounding Umbrian countryside. Rolling hills, cultivated fields, and natural landscapes frame the city, illustrating the harmonious relationship between Assisi and its environment. Such settings were a common feature of eighteenth-century topographical views, combining geographic accuracy with picturesque beauty.
Assisi Città dello Stato Pontificio exemplifies the cartographic and artistic traditions of the Enlightenment era. Today, it remains a valuable historical document, preserving the appearance of Assisi before modern development while celebrating the cultural, religious, and architectural heritage of one of Italy’s most iconic cities.
