Nicaea ad Varum Cum Novo Urbis Incremento (1682) is a finely engraved city plan of Nice (Nicaea) by Joan Blaeu, produced in the late phase of the Blaeu firm’s cartographic activity. The plan documents the city at a moment of significant transformation, emphasizing the “new urban expansion” (novo urbis incremento) that reshaped Nice during the second half of the 17th century.
The map presents Nice from a measured, planimetric perspective, combining a detailed ground plan with pictorial elements. The historic core of the city, clustered near the coastline and dominated by the fortified Castle Hill (Colline du Château), is clearly delineated. Bastioned fortifications, curtain walls, and defensive outworks reflect the city’s strategic importance at the eastern edge of Provence, near the Var River, and its role as a contested frontier between France and the Duchy of Savoy.
Particular attention is given to the newly developed quarters, laid out with greater regularity than the medieval town. These expansions illustrate the influence of early modern urban planning and military engineering, with broader streets and geometrically organized blocks responding to both defensive needs and population growth. Harbors, roads, and coastal installations underscore Nice’s maritime and commercial functions.
Blaeu’s refined engraving style is evident in the crisp line work, balanced lettering, and careful use of shading. A decorative cartouche bearing the Latin title situates the map within the visual language of Dutch Golden Age cartography, while maintaining a strong emphasis on accuracy and clarity. Orientation, scale, and annotation are designed for both reference and display.
As one of the later Blaeu city plans, Nicaea ad Varum Cum Novo Urbis Incremento is an important historical record of Nice’s 17th-century urban development. It captures the city at a pivotal moment, preserving the transition from medieval settlement to fortified early modern city within the broader context of Mediterranean and European political rivalry.
