"A Chart of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands with the Adjacent Continent, Drawn from the latest Surveys, by J. W. Norie, Hydrographer" is a historically significant nautical chart created in 1856 by J. W. Norie, an esteemed hydrographer of his time. Serving as an essential navigational aid for sailors, this meticulously crafted chart offers a comprehensive and accurate depiction of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, along with the neighboring continental areas.

The chart showcases the intricate geography of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, detailing the outlines of each island, their relative sizes, and the spatial relationships between them. J. W. Norie's commitment to precision is evident in the representation of coastal features, including bays, peninsulas, and prominent headlands, crucial for sailors to navigate safely.

An indispensable feature of the chart is the inclusion of depth soundings, providing mariners with invaluable information about the depths of the surrounding waters. This knowledge is vital in avoiding treacherous shallows, submerged hazards, and reefs, ensuring safe passage for ships traversing these maritime zones.

To assist sailors in their navigation, the chart features recommended routes that highlight safe passages and optimal courses for approaching and departing from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. These routes take into account potential currents, tides, and wind patterns, enabling seafarers to plan their journeys efficiently.

J. W. Norie's chart also incorporates important coastal landmarks, such as lighthouses and prominent cliffs, serving as essential visual references for sailors to identify their location accurately. A compass rose, prominently displayed on the chart, aids in establishing cardinal directions and helps mariners align their compasses with true north.

Beyond its navigational utility, this chart stands as a testament to the scientific advancements and cartographic excellence of the 19th century. Though created over a century ago, the chart remains a testament to J. W. Norie's dedication to accuracy and the meticulous craftsmanship of hydrographers during this era.
