Antique map of British settlements, Malay peninsula, coast of Borneo, 1860
"British Settlements in the Malay Peninsula and Coast of Borneo. Compiled from the Admiralty and various other Surveys, 1860" is a historical map or chart published by Archibald Fullarton & Co. in the year 1860.
During the 19th century, the Malay Peninsula and the Coast of Borneo were of significant interest to British colonial powers due to their strategic locations and rich natural resources. As such, various surveys and mapping efforts were conducted to gain a better understanding of the region.
The map contains detailed geographical information about British settlements, coastal areas, rivers, mountains, and other features of the Malay Peninsula and the Coast of Borneo, as well as the neighboring seas. It would have been used by navigators, explorers, traders, and government officials of that time to aid in their navigation, exploration, and administration of the territories.
Archibald Fullarton & Co. was a prominent Scottish publishing company based in Glasgow, Scotland, during the 19th century. The company was established by Archibald Fullarton, who was a bookseller and publisher. It was well-known for producing a wide range of publications, including atlases, maps, travel guides, and educational books.
One of the most notable works published by Archibald Fullarton & Co. was "The Parliamentary Gazetteer of Scotland," a comprehensive geographical dictionary of Scotland, first published in 1842. This massive project provided detailed information about every place in Scotland, including its history, geography, population, and economy.
The company was also involved in producing numerous maps and charts, like the one mentioned in the previous message, titled "British Settlements in the Malay Peninsula and Coast of Borneo," which was compiled from various surveys conducted, including those carried out by the Admiralty. These maps were significant during the 19th century for navigation, exploration, and territorial administration.
Archibald Fullarton & Co. played a crucial role in disseminating geographical knowledge and educational material during its time of operation. The company contributed significantly to the development of cartography and geographical literature in the 19th century. However, like many businesses, its operations might have evolved or ceased over time, and more recent information about the company may be limited.
