The 1829 Crawfurd Map of Burma, also known as Myanmar, stands as a seminal cartographic achievement. Crafted by John Crawfurd, a Scottish surgeon and diplomat, this map was meticulously prepared to complement his Journal of an Embassy from the Governor General of India to the Court of Ava. It emerges as a pivotal cartographic representation of the region, spanning from Calcutta to China's Yunnan Province, northern Laos, and extending from Tassisudon to the confluence of the Irrawaddy River and the Gulf of Martaban.

Crawfurd's map drew upon both his personal observations and the latest available maps and surveys, marking a substantial improvement over prior maps of Burma, many of which were riddled with inaccuracies and omissions. Esteemed by scholars and cartographers, this map remains a significant historical artifact.

The map itself is bifurcated into two sections. The upper portion vividly showcases Burma's interior, encompassing the Irrawaddy River Valley, the Shan Plateau, and the Tenasserim coast. Meanwhile, the lower section encompasses neighboring countries such as India, China, Siam, and Laos. Abounding in meticulous detail, it boasts place names, geopolitical boundaries, river systems, mountain ranges, and sprawling forests.

Crawfurd's map served as an invaluable instrument for comprehending Burma's regional significance. It played a pivotal role in advancing British interests within the area and facilitated further exploration and scholarly inquiry. This enduring map stands as a testament to Crawfurd's profound contributions to the field of cartography and our comprehension of Burma's intricate geography.

John Crawfurd was a notable Scottish figure of the 19th century known for his diverse career as a surgeon, diplomat, and important contributions to geography and ethnography.

Crawfurd's contributions as a cartographer were significant. He is best known for the 1829 Crawfurd Map of Burma (Myanmar), which was considered highly accurate and played a crucial role in furthering knowledge of the region.
