Antique map of Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Romania, 1744
The map "Hungariae ampliori significatu et veteris vel Methodicae" from 1744 was crafted by Homann Heirs.
The title translates to "Hungary in a larger and more significant sense, either old or methodical." This suggests that the map or work in question is related to Hungary and may depict the region in a broader or more meaningful context.
Johann Baptist Homann (1664–1724) was a German geographer and cartographer who played a significant role in the development of mapmaking during the 18th century. He was born on March 20, 1664, in Oberkammlach, a small village in Bavaria, Germany.
After the death of Johann Baptist Homann in 1724, his business was carried on by his son, Johann Christoph Homann, and a group of his employees. They continued to publish maps and atlases under the name "Homann Heirs" (Homannianos Heredes in Latin). The Homann Heirs included not only family members but also other individuals who were involved in the cartographic and publishing activities of the firm.
Under the management of the Homann Heirs, the map publishing house continued to thrive and maintain its reputation for producing high-quality maps. They expanded the range of maps and atlases, covering various regions and themes. The firm's output contributed significantly to the dissemination of geographical knowledge during the 18th century.
The Homann Heirs continued to operate until the early 19th century. Eventually, changes in ownership and the decline in demand for traditional maps contributed to the closure of the Homann map publishing business. Despite its closure, the maps and atlases produced by Johann Baptist Homann and the Homann Heirs remain highly sought after by collectors and historians for their historical accuracy and artistic value.
