Johnson's Missouri and Kansas, published in 1862 by Alvin Jewett Johnson and Ross C. Browning, is a historically important map of the American Midwest produced during one of the most turbulent periods in United States history. Covering the neighboring states of Missouri and Kansas, the map provides a detailed picture of the region at the beginning of the American Civil War, when both territories occupied an exceptionally important strategic position.

The map records an extensive network of counties, towns, settlements, rivers, roads, and other geographic features, illustrating the rapid development of the region during the nineteenth century. Missouri's position along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers made it a crucial transportation and commercial corridor, while Kansas represented the western frontier of settlement and expansion.

The year 1862 gives this map particular historical significance. Missouri was a strategically vital border state whose population was deeply divided between Union and Confederate sympathies. Kansas, admitted to the Union as a free state in January 1861, had itself experienced violent political conflict over the question of slavery during the preceding decade. Known as “Bleeding Kansas,” the territory had become an important symbol of the national struggle that ultimately led to war.

The map therefore documents a landscape shaped not only by geography but also by rapidly changing political boundaries and military considerations. Rivers such as the Missouri, Mississippi, Kansas, and Osage were essential transportation routes, while settlements and roads reveal the expanding network of communities that connected the region.

Johnson and Browning were prominent American map publishers whose maps were produced for atlases and commercial use. Their work combined practical geographical information with the detailed engraving and hand-colouring characteristic of nineteenth-century American cartography. Maps such as this were valuable to travelers, businessmen, settlers, military personnel, and government officials seeking reliable information about a rapidly changing nation.

For collectors of Civil War maps, American history, Midwest cartography, and nineteenth-century maps, Johnson's Missouri and Kansas is especially desirable. It captures these two states at a pivotal moment, just as the Civil War was transforming the political, economic, and geographic landscape of the United States.
