The "Grand View of Paris: Lutetiae, vulgo, Paris, Urbis Galliarum Primariæ, Non Europæ Solius, Sed Orbis Totius Celeberrimæ Prospectus" (1669) is a stunning panoramic depiction of Paris created collaboratively by Nicolas Berey Alexis, Hubert Jaillot Noël, and Noël Cochin. This work exemplifies the artistic and cartographic brilliance of 17th-century France and presents Paris as a cultural and political jewel not only of Europe but of the entire world, as the title suggests.
The map offers a bird’s-eye view of Paris, meticulously detailing its streets, bridges, iconic landmarks, and the Seine River, which flows gracefully through the heart of the city. The layout captures both the medieval and early modern character of Paris, with its dense urban core and emerging grandeur under the reign of Louis XIV, the "Sun King."
This map was created during a period of transformation and splendor for Paris under Louis XIV, who was centralizing power and enhancing the city’s grandeur as the seat of French monarchy. The city’s infrastructure and urban design were being modernized, including the construction of monumental buildings and bridges that reflected the king’s vision of Paris as a center of art, culture, and governance.
The map also reflects Paris’s dual identity: as a historic medieval city and as a burgeoning metropolis embodying the ideals of the Baroque era.
The Grand View of Paris 1669 is a masterpiece of early modern cartography, celebrated for its artistic detail, historical importance, and representation of Paris at a pivotal moment in its development. It serves as both a work of art and a valuable historical document, cherished by collectors, historians, and cartography enthusiasts for its depiction of one of the world’s most iconic cities.
