This 1949 Bordeaux wine map presents a comprehensive view of the Entre-Deux-Mers region alongside Graves de Vayres and Sainte-Foy, capturing the right-bank landscape during a pivotal postwar period of viticultural continuity and renewal. Situated between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, Entre-Deux-Mers forms one of Bordeaux’s most expansive wine territories, historically associated with fresh, mineral-driven white wines grown on rolling clay-limestone hills.

The map carefully delineates communal boundaries, vineyard parcels, and key market towns, offering a structured representation of agricultural organization in the late 1940s. River systems are prominently traced, emphasizing their climatic and commercial importance. The Dordogne and Garonne not only define the region geographically but also shape its microclimates, soil drainage, and historic transport routes.

Graves de Vayres appears to the west of Libourne, characterized by gravelly soils reminiscent of the broader Graves region. Sainte-Foy, located near the Dordogne’s eastern stretch, is distinctly marked, underscoring its limestone slopes and mixed red and white production. Elevation changes are subtly indicated, reinforcing the importance of hillside exposure and drainage in vineyard placement.

Typography is precise and methodical, typical of mid-century French wine cartography. Estates, villages, and access roads are clearly labeled, reflecting both commercial functionality and territorial identity. The aesthetic remains restrained, prioritizing geographic clarity over ornamentation.

As a historical artifact, this 1949 map documents the spatial configuration of Entre-Deux-Mers and its neighboring appellations before modern restructuring and classification adjustments. It preserves a snapshot of Bordeaux’s right-bank viticultural landscape at a time when tradition, terroir, and river commerce remained central to regional identity.
