Issued in 1953 by A. Cowles Daley and Allan M. Whitlock, this Malibu California Street & Place Map captures the coastal community at a formative moment in its postwar transformation. Produced during a period when Malibu was evolving from a secluded ranching coastline into an emerging residential and recreational enclave, the map documents the early structure of roads, parcels, and oceanfront development with crisp mid-century clarity.
The composition follows the dramatic contour of the Pacific shoreline, with the Pacific Coast Highway serving as the dominant linear axis. Secondary canyon roads branch inland toward the Santa Monica Mountains, indicating the gradual expansion of hillside residences and rural subdivisions. Streets, property tracts, beaches, and named localities are carefully identified, reflecting both practical navigational use and speculative real estate interest characteristic of Southern California in the 1950s.
Typography is clean and functional, typical of postwar American commercial cartography. The layout emphasizes accessibility and orientation, with clear block structuring and measured spacing. Coastal features—points, coves, and beaches—are distinctly marked, underscoring Malibu’s defining relationship with the Pacific Ocean. Subdivision lines and lot delineations suggest a landscape in transition, balancing open terrain with increasing private ownership.
Beyond its utility as a street guide, the map stands as a cultural artifact of California’s mid-century growth. It reflects automobile mobility, coastal desirability, and the early stages of Malibu’s identity as an exclusive yet developing seaside community.
