Piet Mondrian’s Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow (1930) exemplifies his mature Neoplastic style, developed through the De Stijl movement. This painting is a hallmark of geometric abstraction and Mondrian’s pursuit of harmony and balance through simplicity.

Mondrian's composition features a grid of black lines that define rectangular areas filled with blocks of primary colors—red, blue, and yellow—alongside areas of white space. The arrangement is asymmetrical, yet it achieves an equilibrium that reflects his belief in a universal order. The painting embodies his idea of "dynamic equilibrium," where the relationship between elements creates balance without symmetry.

The work rejects representational imagery, reflecting Mondrian’s dedication to abstraction as a means to express spiritual truths. By reducing forms to their essential geometric components and limiting his palette to primary colors and non-colors (black, white, and gray), Mondrian aimed to transcend the natural world and capture pure essence and universal harmony.

The composition’s use of black lines is critical—they do not function as boundaries but as active elements, creating tension and interplay among the colored blocks and white spaces. The placement and size of each color block seem carefully calculated, creating a rhythm and balance that engage the viewer’s eye.

This painting is a quintessential example of Mondrian’s innovative approach, which influenced not only fine art but also architecture, design, and modern aesthetics. Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow encapsulates the ideals of clarity, order, and spirituality that Mondrian believed could serve as a model for a harmonious society.
