Rémy Hétreau’s Wines of Roussillon and Provence: The Vineyards of France (1954) is a masterfully illustrated map celebrating the wine-producing regions of southeastern France. Hétreau, a gifted mid-20th-century French illustrator and cartographer, combines his artistic talent with a deep appreciation for France’s rich viticultural heritage, creating a map that is both informative and visually delightful.

This pictorial map highlights the vineyards of Roussillon and Provence, regions renowned for their distinctive wines. Roussillon, located near the Spanish border, is famous for its sun-drenched landscapes and robust reds, while Provence, stretching along the Mediterranean coast, is celebrated for its crisp rosés and aromatic whites. Hétreau uses vibrant colors to capture the essence of these regions, from the golden hues of Mediterranean sunlight to the lush greens of the vineyards.

The map features charming illustrations of regional landmarks, towns, and winemaking activities. Iconic symbols like grape clusters, barrels, and workers harvesting grapes emphasize the cultural and economic importance of wine production. Geographical elements, such as the rolling hills of Provence and the rugged terrain of Roussillon, are skillfully depicted to provide context and depth.

A decorative border, perhaps adorned with motifs inspired by regional art and traditions, frames the map, adding to its aesthetic appeal. The inclusion of wine names or appellations, such as Côtes de Provence or Banyuls, further situates the map within the oenological world, offering an educational glimpse into the diversity of wines these regions produce.

Hétreau’s Wines of Roussillon and Provence is more than just a map; it is a celebration of French culture, craftsmanship, and terroir. Today, it serves as a nostalgic tribute to the golden age of French cartographic art and the enduring allure of its wine regions.
