The "Messana Urbs est Sicilie" (1593) by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg is an exquisite early modern map of Messina, a prominent city in Sicily. This map is part of the renowned "Civitates Orbis Terrarum", a monumental atlas that depicted cities from across the known world. The work is a blend of artistic elegance and geographic precision, showcasing Messina as it was in the late 16th century—a vital Mediterranean port with historical, economic, and cultural significance.
The map provides a detailed depiction of Messina, emphasizing its strategic location and urban structure:
- Harbor and Port: Messina’s natural harbor, shaped like a sickle (from which the city derives its ancient name, Zancle), is prominently featured. The harbor is depicted bustling with ships, reflecting the city’s importance as a maritime hub.
- City Walls and Fortifications: The map highlights Messina’s defensive walls and bastions, underscoring its role as a fortified city protecting against invasions and pirate attacks.
- Urban Layout: Streets, public squares, and key buildings are clearly delineated, showcasing the city’s well-organized structure.
- Surrounding Landscape: The map captures the surrounding hills and coastline, emphasizing the natural beauty and strategic geography of the region.
By 1593, Messina was a thriving city under Spanish rule, part of the Kingdom of Sicily. It served as a crucial trading port between Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. The map reflects the city during a period of relative prosperity and strategic importance, just before it faced significant challenges, including natural disasters and political upheavals in the centuries that followed.
The "Messana Urbs est Sicilie" map is a vital historical artifact that provides insights into the urban, economic, and cultural life of 16th-century Messina. As part of the "Civitates Orbis Terrarum", it contributes to a broader understanding of early modern cartography and the way cities were represented during the Renaissance. Today, it is highly valued by historians, geographers, and collectors for its artistic merit and historical significance.
