Jodocus Hondius was a renowned Dutch cartographer and engraver who lived from 1563 to 1612. He was born in Wakken, Flanders (now Belgium) and later moved to Amsterdam, where he established himself as a prominent figure in the field of cartography.

Hondius is particularly known for his work in producing and publishing maps, atlases, and globes during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He collaborated with other notable cartographers and geographers of his time, including Gerardus Mercator.

One of Hondius' notable works is a map titled "Tartariae sive Magni Chami Regni typus," which was published in 1606. This map depicts the region of Tartary, a historical region in Central Asia. During that period, Tartary was a term commonly used in European maps to refer to a vast territory that encompassed parts of present-day Russia, Mongolia, China, and Central Asian countries.

Hondius' map of Tartary is a detailed and beautifully engraved piece, reflecting the limited knowledge and exploration of the region at the time. It includes various geographical features, rivers, mountain ranges, and cities, as well as decorative elements such as sea monsters, ships, and elaborate cartouches.

The map also depicts the Great Wall of China, showcasing the European fascination with this iconic landmark. It provides an intriguing glimpse into the European understanding of Central Asia and the vast unknown territories beyond during the Age of Exploration.

Hondius' maps and atlases played a significant role in disseminating geographical knowledge and shaping European perceptions of the world. His works were highly sought after and had a lasting impact on the development of cartography.
