Sigismund Latomus's Abriss der Statt und Festung Breda (Plan of the City and Fortress of Breda), published in 1624, is a detailed depiction of the Siege of Breda during the Eighty Years' War. This conflict, which pitted the Spanish Empire against Dutch forces, culminated in one of its most dramatic moments with the capture of Breda by Spanish troops under General Ambrogio Spinola.

Latomus's map serves as both a historical record and a propaganda piece, reflecting the military precision and engineering expertise of the time. It illustrates the city of Breda, situated in the southern Netherlands, as well as the extensive siegeworks surrounding it. Trenches, encampments, artillery positions, and fortifications are meticulously rendered, providing insights into 17th-century siege warfare. The city's star-shaped bastions, a hallmark of Renaissance military architecture, are prominently displayed.

The map combines practical military details with artistic embellishments. A decorative cartouche frames the title, often accompanied by allegorical figures, military banners, or coats of arms, emphasizing the significance of the event. The map may include explanatory legends or annotations detailing key aspects of the siege, such as troop movements or the placement of defensive and offensive structures.

The Abriss der Statt und Festung Breda not only documented the siege for contemporary audiences but also glorified the Spanish victory, reinforcing Spinola's reputation as a master strategist. This event was immortalized in Velázquez’s famous painting, The Surrender of Breda, further emphasizing its cultural and political importance.
