The map was published in 1691 by the French cartographer Nicolas Sanson and later updated and republished by Alexis-Hubert Jaillot.

The title can be translated as "Geo-Hydrographic World Map or General Description of the Terrestrial and Aquatic Globe in Two Hemispheres, Wherein All Parts of the Earth and Water Are Accurately Represented According to the Most Recent Accounts, by Mr. Sanson, Geographer to the King."

The map was a world map that aimed to provide a comprehensive representation of the Earth's terrestrial and aquatic features. It incorporated the latest geographical knowledge of the time, reflecting the discoveries and explorations made during the late 17th century.

Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) and Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (1632-1712) were both prominent French cartographers who made significant contributions to the field of mapmaking.

Nicolas Sanson is often regarded as the founder of the French school of cartography. He served as the Geographer to the French King Louis XIII and later to Louis XIV. Sanson is known for his expertise in map design, precision, and attention to detail. He created numerous maps, including world maps, regional maps, and maps of individual countries and regions. Sanson's maps were highly regarded for their accuracy and were influential in shaping European cartography.

Alexis-Hubert Jaillot, on the other hand, was a French geographer and cartographer who worked in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He was initially a sculptor but later transitioned to mapmaking. Jaillot acquired the map plates and business of Nicolas Sanson after the latter's death in 1667. He continued to produce and publish maps using Sanson's work as a foundation. Jaillot expanded upon Sanson's maps and incorporated new geographical information from various sources, including the latest explorations and surveys.

Together, Sanson and Jaillot contributed to the development and dissemination of accurate and detailed maps during a time of significant advancements in cartography. Their maps played a crucial role in expanding geographic knowledge and were highly influential in the field of mapmaking in France and beyond.
