J. Rapkin and John Tallis were both cartographers and publishers known for their beautiful and decorative maps during the mid-19th century. In 1851, they collaborated to produce a map titled "China and Birmah" (now spelled as "China and Burma").

The map featured the regions of China and Burma (now Myanmar) and was part of the Tallis's Illustrated Atlas series, which consisted of highly detailed and embellished maps. These maps were known for their artistic elements, including intricate engravings, decorative borders, and vignettes of significant landmarks or cultural scenes.

During the 19th century, Europe was fascinated by the distant and exotic lands of Asia, and maps like "China and Birmah" were in high demand among collectors and the general public. These maps not only served practical navigational purposes but also became pieces of art that adorned many households.

John Tallis was a publisher and mapmaker, known for his highly decorative and beautifully illustrated maps. He was active during the mid-19th century and produced a series of maps for his "Tallis's Illustrated Atlas" between 1850 and 1851. These maps covered various regions of the world and were renowned for their artistic features.

John Rapkin, on the other hand, was an engraver who worked with several publishers, including John Tallis. He was well-regarded for his intricate and detailed engravings, which added to the allure of the maps published by Tallis.

Together, John Tallis's maps, which often included the engravings of John Rapkin, were considered some of the finest examples of mapmaking and cartography of the 19th century. The maps were beautifully designed, incorporating illustrations of landscapes, city views, people in traditional dress, and cultural scenes.
