Carington Bowles was a prominent British map and print seller in the late 18th century. He operated a successful business in London, specializing in selling maps, prints, and books. One of his notable works is the "Bowles's new pocket map of the world," which was published in 1791.

This particular map was designed to be conveniently portable, as indicated by its name "pocket map." It aimed to provide an up-to-date representation of the world based on the latest observations and discoveries of the time. It included the most recent geographical knowledge available, with a particular emphasis on the newly explored regions, especially those in the southern seas.

The 18th century was a period of great exploration and discovery, and many expeditions were undertaken to explore and map uncharted territories, especially in the southern hemisphere. Bowles's map aimed to incorporate these new findings and present an accurate and comprehensive view of the world.

The map depicted the continents, countries, major cities, and geographical features known at the time. It would have also included information about colonial possessions and trade routes, as these were significant aspects of the era.

Carington Bowles (1724-1793) was a British print and map seller who operated a successful business in London during the 18th century. He was the son of John Bowles, another prominent print and map seller, and he continued and expanded upon his father's business.

Carington Bowles was known for his production and sale of maps, prints, and books, catering to a wide range of customers, including collectors, travelers, and enthusiasts. He published and sold various types of maps, including world maps, regional maps, city plans, and pocket maps.

Bowles's maps were known for their accuracy and detail, often incorporating the latest geographical knowledge and discoveries of the time. His works catered to the growing interest in exploration and geography during the 18th century, reflecting the spirit of the Age of Enlightenment and the expanding global knowledge of the era.

In addition to maps, Bowles also produced and sold prints, which were popular among collectors and art enthusiasts. These prints covered a wide range of subjects, including historical events, portraits of notable individuals, landscapes, and genre scenes.

Carington Bowles retired from his business in 1791 and passed away two years later in 1793.
