Antique map Polus Antarcticus Terra Australis Incognita, 1680
Frederick De Wit was a renowned Dutch cartographer and publisher who lived from 1629 to 1706. He was known for his production of high-quality maps and atlases during the Dutch Golden Age. One of his notable works is the map titled "Polus Antarcticus Terra Australis Incognita," which was published in 1680.
The map "Polus Antarcticus Terra Australis Incognita" by Frederick De Wit depicted the southern regions of the Earth, including the South Pole and the surrounding areas. It reflected the prevailing knowledge and speculations of the time regarding the southernmost parts of the world.
As the name suggests, the map combined the concept of "Polus Antarcticus" or the South Pole with "Terra Australis Incognita" or the unknown southern land. This amalgamation of ideas and geographical features was common during that period, as explorers and mapmakers were trying to piece together an accurate representation of the world based on limited information.
De Wit's map would have included representations of the Antarctic region, although it is important to note that the actual details and accuracy of the depiction would have been limited due to the lack of comprehensive exploration of the area at that time. The map might have showcased hypothetical coastlines, speculative islands, and other features associated with the notion of Terra Australis Incognita.
The map "Polus Antarcticus Terra Australis Incognita" by Frederick De Wit represents a fascinating historical document that offers insight into the cartographic knowledge and beliefs of the late 17th century regarding the uncharted southern regions of the Earth.
