Johannes Janssonius, also known as Johannes Jansson or Jan Jansson, was a Dutch cartographer and publisher who lived during the 17th century. He was born on July 1, 1588, in Arnhem, Netherlands, and died on July 11, 1664, in Amsterdam.

Janssonius came from a family of publishers and was trained as a bookseller and engraver. In 1612, he married Elisabeth Hondius, the daughter of the famous cartographer Jodocus Hondius. This marriage further solidified his connection to cartography and mapmaking.

After his marriage, Janssonius joined his father-in-law's business and began working on map production. When Hondius passed away in 1612, Janssonius took over the family business, which he expanded and made it one of the most prominent cartographic establishments of its time.

Janssonius is particularly known for producing high-quality atlases and maps, often collaborating with other famous cartographers and engravers of his era. One of his most significant works is the "Atlas Novus," a prestigious atlas first published in 1636. The "Atlas Novus" featured a vast collection of maps covering various regions of the world, including Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Janssonius's maps were renowned for their accuracy and artistic appeal, and he played a crucial role in advancing the cartography of the 17th century. His maps were highly sought after by scholars, navigators, and explorers of his time.

After his death in 1664, the family business was continued by his heirs, but the Janssonius name gradually faded from prominence as other cartographic firms took the lead in the following centuries. Nonetheless, his contributions to cartography and mapmaking during the Golden Age of Dutch cartography remain highly regarded to this day.
