Published in 1946 within the authoritative Atlas de la France Vinicole by L. Larmat, this map documents the eastern Loire Valley appellations of Pouilly-sur-Loire, Sancerre, Quincy, and Reuilly with disciplined cartographic precision. Produced in the immediate post-war era, the atlas reflects a systematic effort to codify vineyard geography at a time when France’s appellation framework was gaining structural permanence.
The Loire River forms the central geographic axis of the composition, its course shaping the climatic and geological identity of the region. Carefully delineated commune boundaries, vineyard zones, transportation routes, and settlement patterns illustrate the organization of production across these distinct yet interconnected appellations. Subtle tonal shading suggests variations in slope and elevation, underscoring the importance of hillside exposure in defining the mineral-driven character of Sauvignon Blanc and, in Reuilly and Quincy, selected red and rosé plantings.
Sancerre and Pouilly-sur-Loire appear prominently along opposing banks of the river, emphasizing their historical rivalry and shared terroir foundations of limestone, flint, and marl. Quincy and Reuilly are plotted further west, highlighting their position within the broader Berry subregion.
Typography is restrained and technical, consistent with Larmat’s educational purpose for wine merchants, négociants, and oenological students. The absence of decorative excess reinforces the map’s function as a professional reference.
