This 1941 wine map of the Sauternes and Barsac region presents a precise wartime-era depiction of Bordeaux’s most celebrated sweet wine territory. Situated south of Bordeaux along the left bank of the Garonne River, the appellation is defined by the confluence of the Garonne and the Ciron, whose cool morning mists create the microclimatic conditions essential for the development of Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. The map captures this geographically compact yet globally renowned district at a moment of historical uncertainty, while its viticultural structure remained firmly established.
The composition carefully delineates communal boundaries, prominently identifying Sauternes and Barsac, along with surrounding villages such as Bommes, Fargues, and Preignac. Vineyard parcels and château estates are methodically positioned, reflecting the enduring influence of the 1855 Classification, which elevated several Sauternes properties to Premier Cru Supérieur and Premier Cru status. The spatial organization emphasizes the intimate scale of the region compared to the broader Graves.
Topographical nuances are subtly rendered, highlighting gravelly rises and sandy-clay soils that provide drainage and heat retention. The Ciron River is distinctly traced, underscoring its climatic significance in encouraging the alternating humidity and sunshine required for successive harvests, or tries.
Typography is disciplined and functional, characteristic of early 1940s French cartography. Roads, rail lines, and river access points are clearly marked, situating the appellation within its commercial framework.
