This is a map of Besançon, France, published in 1580 by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg. The map is a woodcut, and it shows the city in great detail, including its fortifications, buildings, and the river Doubs.
The title "Vesontio Sequanorum Gallis Bensan son Germanis Byzantz" translates to "Vesontio, city of the Sequani, called Besançon by the Gauls and Byzanz by the Germans.".
"Vesontio" is the Latin name for the city of Besançon, which is located in eastern France and is the capital of the Doubs department. "Sequanorum" indicates that it is associated with the Sequani, a Gallic tribe that once inhabited the region. "Gallis" means "in Gaul" (France), and "Bensan" may be a variant of Besançon.
The map is based on a map by Jacob van Deventer, which was published in 1568. Braun and Hogenberg updated the map with new information, including the addition of the citadel, which was built in the late 16th century.
Georg Braun (1541-1622) was a German cleric and cartographer known for his contributions to the "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" (Cities of the World), a six-volume city atlas published between 1572 and 1617. This atlas contained detailed views and maps of cities from various regions around the world.
Frans Hogenberg (c. 1535-1590) was a Flemish engraver and mapmaker who collaborated with Georg Braun on the "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" project. Hogenberg was responsible for creating many of the engravings used in the atlas.
