Finland and Arctic Sea is a striking seventeenth-century map created by Frederick de Wit, one of the leading map publishers of the Dutch Golden Age. Produced around 1675, the map reflects Europe’s growing interest in northern geography, maritime trade routes, and territorial knowledge during an era of expanding exploration and scientific inquiry.

The map depicts Finland and surrounding northern regions extending toward the Arctic Ocean. It includes parts of Sweden, Norway, and areas bordering northern Russia, presenting a detailed view of a region that remained relatively remote for many European audiences of the time. Coastlines, waterways, islands, and settlements are carefully engraved, balancing geographic observation with artistic interpretation.

The Arctic waters receive particular emphasis, reflecting the era’s fascination with northern sea routes and commercial opportunities. European powers were increasingly interested in Arctic navigation as they searched for faster trade passages and expanded maritime influence.

As with many maps from this period, the work also serves decorative purposes. Elaborate cartouches, ornamental typography, and finely engraved details transform the map into a collectible object as well as a practical geographic tool. Sea imagery and decorative flourishes often reinforced the drama and mystery associated with northern territories.

Although seventeenth-century cartography occasionally contained geographic inaccuracies, maps like this played an important role in shaping European understanding of distant regions. They combined scientific ambition with artistic craftsmanship.

Finland and Arctic Sea remains a valuable historical artifact that documents early modern perceptions of northern Europe while showcasing the precision and beauty of Dutch cartographic engraving traditions.
