Jan Jansson’s Middelburgum (1657) is an elegant copper-engraved bird’s-eye view of Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland and one of the wealthiest cities of the Dutch Republic during the 17th century. Published in Jansson’s celebrated “Theatrum Urbium” or as part of his expanded town-book series, the plate exemplifies the refined urban cartography that characterized Amsterdam’s great publishing houses at the height of the Dutch Golden Age.
The city is presented from an elevated oblique perspective, revealing Middelburg’s distinctive star-shaped fortifications, broad canals, and meticulously planned urban structure that developed under both medieval and Renaissance influences. The powerful circular harbor and the surrounding waterways emphasize the city’s role as a major maritime and commercial hub for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Warehouses, docks, and merchant facilities are clearly rendered, underscoring Middelburg’s economic vitality in the decades following the Eighty Years’ War.
Prominent architectural landmarks are crisply engraved, including the Abbey complex, the soaring Lange Jan tower, the Town Hall, and various churches and guild structures that attest to the city’s civic pride and wealth. Streets and residential quarters are shown with great regularity, conveying the order and prosperity associated with Zeeland’s thriving textile, trade, and shipbuilding industries.
The composition typically includes a decorative title cartouche, often bearing coats of arms or allegorical motifs, along with a clear lettered key identifying important buildings and features. Jansson’s engravers achieved a harmonious blend of accuracy and artistry, producing a view that served both as a practical urban reference and an object of aesthetic admiration for contemporary collectors.
