Braun & Hogenberg's "Lugdunum" refers to their depiction of the ancient Roman city of Lugdunum, which is now modern-day Lyon in France. In their renowned work "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" (Cities of the World), published between 1572 and 1617, they included detailed bird's-eye views, plans, and maps of various cities from around the world, including historical and contemporary cities.

The depiction of Lugdunum in "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" would have provided a visual representation of the city during the Renaissance period, showcasing its layout, architecture, and notable landmarks. These maps and views not only served as valuable geographic references but also as historical and cultural records, offering insights into the urban environment and life of that era.

Georg Braun (1541-1622) was a German cleric, geographer, and cartographer whose life's work made an indelible mark on the fields of geography and cartography during the Renaissance period. Braun, a Catholic cleric and canon at the Cathedral of Cologne, possessed a deep fascination with maps and geography.

His most notable achievement was the collaborative creation of the "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" (Cities of the World), a monumental six-volume atlas published between 1572 and 1617. This pioneering work, produced in partnership with Frans Hogenberg, featured meticulously detailed bird's-eye views, plans, and maps of cities from various corners of the globe. Not only did it provide valuable geographic information, but it also incorporated descriptive texts and historical notes about the cities depicted, offering a comprehensive understanding of urban life, architecture, and culture during the Renaissance era.

Frans Hogenberg (ca. 1535-1590) was a Flemish engraver and mapmaker who played a pivotal role in the advancement of cartography during the late 16th century. His contributions, particularly in collaboration with Georg Braun, left an enduring mark on the field of cartography and the understanding of Renaissance-era cities.

Hogenberg is most renowned for his partnership with Georg Braun in creating the "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" (Cities of the World), a six-volume atlas published between 1572 and 1617. This groundbreaking work featured intricate bird's-eye views, plans, and maps of cities from around the world, providing invaluable insights into the urban landscapes and architectural marvels of his time.

His skills as an engraver were instrumental in bringing these city views to life with astonishing detail and precision. Each illustration not only showcased the physical layout of cities but also incorporated cultural and historical elements, making the Civitates Orbis Terrarum a comprehensive resource for historians, geographers, and art enthusiasts.
