Giovanni Antonio Magini’s Regno di Sicilia map, published in 1620, is a masterful cartographic depiction of the Kingdom of Sicily—an important and historically rich region encompassing the island of Sicily and, at times, parts of southern mainland Italy. This map was included in Magini’s ambitious Italia atlas, a groundbreaking geographical work aiming to chart the Italian peninsula region by region with unprecedented accuracy and detail.

The Regno di Sicilia map offers a vivid and structured portrayal of Sicily’s topography, settlements, and coastlines. Prominent cities such as Palermo, Messina, Catania, and Syracuse are marked with prominence, along with mountain ranges like the Nebrodi and Madonie, and the towering Mount Etna, which is often illustrated in eruption. Rivers, forests, and natural harbors are intricately rendered, providing insight into both the geography and strategic importance of the island.

Magini's work also reflects the cultural and political context of early 17th-century Sicily, then under Spanish rule as part of the larger Spanish Habsburg dominion in southern Italy. The map includes elaborate cartouches, coats of arms, and maritime motifs such as sailing ships and sea creatures, all characteristic of Baroque-era cartographic artistry. These decorative elements enhance the map’s visual grandeur while emphasizing Sicily’s prestige and historical legacy.

As with the rest of the Italia atlas, this map combines Renaissance humanism with scientific precision. Magini (1555–1617), a professor of mathematics at the University of Bologna and a prominent astronomer, sought to produce an atlas that not only served navigational and administrative purposes but also celebrated Italy’s regional identities and classical heritage.

Completed and published by his son Fabio after Magini’s death, the Regno di Sicilia map remains a valuable historical document, admired for its artistic quality and its contribution to early modern geographic knowledge.
