Johannes Baptista Vrients was a Flemish publisher and cartographer who was active during the late 16th century. He was born in 1552 in Brussels, Belgium, and died in 1612 in Antwerp. Vrients is well known for his collaboration with Abraham Ortelius, one of the most prominent cartographers of the time.
In 1596, Vrients published a world map titled "Orbis Terrae Compendiosa Descriptio Ex peristissimorum totius orbis Gaeographorum operibus desumpta" (A Concise Description of the World Drawn from the Most Excellent Works of All Geographers). This map was included in the atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" (Theatre of the World), which was initially created by Abraham Ortelius.
The "Orbis Terrae Compendiosa Descriptio" is a world map that aimed to provide a comprehensive and condensed depiction of the known world at the time. It incorporated geographical information from various sources, including maps and works by renowned geographers and cartographers. The map featured the continents of Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, along with detailed coastlines, major cities, and geographical features.
The map was based on the Ptolemaic projection, a commonly used method in cartography during that period. It showcased a wealth of cartographic details, including mountains, rivers, forests, and regions labeled with their respective names. It also included decorative elements such as ships, sea creatures, and a decorative cartouche.
Vrients played a crucial role in the publication and dissemination of "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum." As a publisher, he worked closely with Ortelius to produce the atlas, which became one of the most influential and celebrated cartographic works of the time.
The maps within "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum," including the "Orbis Terrae Compendiosa Descriptio," contributed to the advancement of geographical knowledge and the development of modern cartography. They provided a standardized and accessible collection of maps, aiding navigators, explorers, and scholars in their understanding of the world.
