Willem Janszoon Blaeu was a renowned Dutch cartographer and publisher who lived during the 16th and 17th centuries. He was born in Alkmaar, Netherlands, on October 31, 1571, and died in Amsterdam on October 21, 1638.

Blaeu was a significant figure in the Golden Age of Dutch cartography and played a crucial role in the development of maritime maps and atlases. He founded one of the most successful cartographic publishing houses of the time, known as the Blaeu family. His son, Joan Blaeu, later took over the business and continued the family's cartographic legacy.

The "West Indische Paskaert" (West Indian Nautical Chart) you mentioned was one of Blaeu's notable works, which he published in 1626. This nautical chart focused on the Western Hemisphere and the Caribbean, displaying navigation routes, coastal features, and islands. The term "Paskaert" was used during that era to refer to maritime maps used by sailors for navigation.

The "waerin de graden der breedte over weder=syden vande middellyn wassende" part of the title indicates that the chart depicted latitude lines increasing southward from the equator. In other words, it presented a projection of the Earth's surface where lines of latitude expanded as they moved farther away from the equator towards the poles.

Blaeu's maps and atlases were highly regarded for their accuracy, artistic quality, and attention to detail. They were influential in shaping European understanding of the world during the Age of Exploration and remain significant historical cartographic pieces today.

In addition to his cartographic pursuits, Blaeu was also an accomplished astronomer. He was appointed as the official cartographer of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and the Dutch West India Company (WIC), which further elevated his status and ensured access to the latest geographical information.

After Blaeu's death in 1638, his business was taken over by his sons, Joan Blaeu and Cornelius Blaeu, who continued to publish maps and atlases that upheld the family's legacy. The Blaeu family's cartographic works remain highly valued and collectible to this day, offering a glimpse into the geographical knowledge and artistic achievements of the Dutch Golden Age.
