Antique Carthesian Map of the Hemispheres, 1701
Peter Schenk (also known as Pieter Schenk) was a Dutch cartographer, engraver, and publisher who lived during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He was born in 1660 in Elberfeld, which is now part of Germany, and died in 1711 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
"Haemisphaeriorum Tabula Carthesiana" is Latin for "Carthesian Map of the Hemispheres," and it refers to a celestial map or chart depicting the northern and southern hemispheres of the sky. This type of map was commonly used for astronomical and navigational purposes.
Peter Schenk created and published this map, showcasing the positions of stars, constellations, and other celestial objects as seen from Earth. Such charts were valuable tools for astronomers, explorers, and sailors in understanding the night sky and navigating across the seas.
As with other cartographic works by Peter Schenk, "Haemisphaeriorum Tabula Carthesiana" was carefully crafted with artistic elements and attention to detail, making it both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Schenk was renowned for his skill in producing high-quality maps, atlases, and prints. He worked as a publisher and collaborated with other notable cartographers and engravers of his time. Schenk's works often featured detailed and decorative cartography, incorporating ornate elements, such as illustrations, portraits, and elaborate borders.
Some of his notable works include maps of various regions, cities, and countries, as well as celestial charts and globes. He was particularly known for his city plans, which were highly accurate and artistically crafted.
Schenk's maps and atlases were widely distributed throughout Europe and were popular among collectors and map enthusiasts.
