The 1823 map of Strasbourg, France, is a beautifully detailed lithographic representation of this historic city during the early 19th century. Created using the innovative lithography printing technique developed by Alois Senefelder, this map captures Strasbourg at a time when it was part of the French territory following the Napoleonic Wars, showcasing the city’s blend of French and German architectural and cultural influences.

This map provides a comprehensive and accurate bird’s-eye view of Strasbourg, emphasizing its intricate urban layout surrounded by the fortifications that once protected the city. The map illustrates the city’s iconic Grande Île, the central island encircled by the Ill River, which serves as the historic heart of Strasbourg. Key landmarks are meticulously depicted, including the towering Strasbourg Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg), known for its stunning Gothic architecture and once the tallest building in the world. The map also highlights other significant structures such as St. Thomas Church, Palais Rohan, and various bridges connecting the island to the surrounding districts.

The map's design includes fine lines and shading techniques characteristic of early lithography, giving it a delicate yet detailed appearance. The layout of streets, canals, and public squares is clearly defined, providing insight into Strasbourg’s urban planning and architecture in the post-revolutionary period. The city's fortifications are prominently featured, reflecting its strategic importance as a border city between France and Germany.

One of the distinctive features of this map is its decorative elements, such as ornate cartouches and a decorative title block, which add a touch of artistry. The inclusion of a scale bar and compass rose emphasizes its practical use as both a navigational tool and a decorative piece.

Printed in monochrome with rich, crisp details, the map not only serves as a geographic guide but also as a historical document, offering a glimpse into Strasbourg’s past during a time of significant political and cultural transformation. It reflects the city's resilience and strategic importance in European history, standing at the crossroads of French and German influences. Today, this map remains a valuable artifact for historians, collectors, and admirers of early cartographic art, capturing the essence of Strasbourg’s heritage in the early 19th century.
