In 1685, the Dutch cartographer and publisher Nicolaes Visscher I unveiled his magnificent creation titled "Insula Ceilon olim Taprobana Incolis Tenarisin et Lankawn exactissime delineata nuperrime edita." This intricately detailed map provides a captivating representation of the island of Ceylon, known as Sri Lanka today.
Visscher's mastery in cartography shines through in this work, as he meticulously captures the island's geographical features, coastlines, rivers, and topography. The map showcases a wealth of information about the island's interior, including mountains, forests, and settlements, reflecting a profound understanding of the region's landscape. Each element is rendered with precision, ensuring that the map is both visually appealing and informative.
Beyond its cartographic accuracy, "Insula Ceilon" boasts artistic splendor. Visscher's maps were renowned for their decorative elements, and this piece is no exception. Elaborate cartouches adorn the corners, featuring intricate designs and mythical figures. The map's title is beautifully inscribed, and the edges are embellished with delicate vignettes, portraying indigenous people, local wildlife, and scenes of daily life, providing an enchanting glimpse into the island's cultural richness.
The title itself, "Insula Ceilon olim Taprobana Incolis Tenarisin et Lankawn exactissime delineata nuperrime edita," conveys the map's historical significance. It references the ancient name "Taprobana," evoking a sense of the island's storied past, while acknowledging its contemporary name "Ceilon" (Sri Lanka). The mention of "Incolis Tenarisin et Lankawn" acknowledges the indigenous inhabitants of the island, though specific details about Tenarisin and Lankawn are not well-documented.
Published in 1685, this map represents the pinnacle of 17th-century cartography, reflecting the period's fascination with exploration and geographical discovery. It served not only as a navigational aid but also as a testament to the expanding knowledge of the world.
Today, "Insula Ceilon olim Taprobana Incolis Tenarisin et Lankawn exactissime delineata nuperrime edita, 1685" stands as a precious historical artifact. Its combination of accurate geographical information and artistic beauty makes it a sought-after collector's item, valued by historians, cartographers, and art enthusiasts alike.
