"Islands in the Indian Ocean" is a map collection created by John Tallis, a renowned English mapmaker and publisher, in collaboration with the cartographer John Rapkin. This collection was published around 1851 as part of Tallis's work, which included producing beautifully illustrated maps and atlases during the 19th century.

The map collection "Islands in the Indian Ocean" featured detailed maps of various islands within the Indian Ocean region. During this period, the British Empire and other European powers were expanding their colonial presence in this area, and maps were essential for navigation, trade, and geopolitical purposes. These maps depicted the coastlines, geographic features, and perhaps even information about the inhabitants, resources, and other relevant details of the islands in the Indian Ocean.

Tallis's maps were known for their decorative elements, including ornate borders, intricate illustrations, and sometimes portraits of notable individuals associated with the regions depicted on the maps. These aesthetic features made Tallis's maps popular among collectors and enthusiasts of the time.

J. Rapkin and John Tallis were indeed notable figures in the 19th century, known for their contributions to mapmaking and the production of decorative maps and atlases. Here's a bit more information about each of them:
