Antique map of polar regions, the Arctic (Septentrional) and the Antarctic, 1730
"Les Deux Poles Arctique ou Septentrional, et Antarctique" by Johannes and Cornelis Mortier, is a map of the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The Mortier family was a well-known Dutch publishing family in the 17th and 18th centuries, and they produced a wide range of maps, atlases, and other printed materials.
"Les Deux Poles Arctique ou Septentrional, et Antarctique" is a map that depicts the two polar regions, the Arctic (Septentrional) and the Antarctic. It was published in Amsterdam around 1730. The map includes geographical features, such as coastlines, islands, and possibly some exploration routes or discoveries made up until that time.
During the 18th century, the exploration of the polar regions was a subject of great interest, and maps like this one were used by explorers, navigators, and scientists to study and understand these remote areas. Maps from this period often incorporated both accurate geographic information and speculative or fictional elements based on limited knowledge and imagination.
Johannes Covens and Cornelis Mortier were map publishers and engravers based in Amsterdam in the 18th century. They were active during the 18th century and continued the business of the Mortier family after the death of Pierre Mortier in 1711.
Johannes Covens (1697-1774) was the son-in-law of Cornelis Mortier (1699-1783), who was the son of Pieter Mortier (1661-1711). After the death of Pieter Mortier, Covens and Cornelis Mortier took over the family business and continued publishing maps and atlases under the name "Covens et Mortier." They were known for reissuing and updating earlier maps from renowned cartographers like Guillaume de l'Isle, as well as creating their own original maps.
Their works included atlases, individual maps, and cartographic compilations. They often collaborated with other prominent mapmakers of the time, such as Jean Baptiste Chatelain and Alexis Hubert Jaillot. Covens and Mortier's publications were highly regarded for their accuracy and decorative quality.
