Johann Homann (1664-1724) was a German cartographer and geographer who is well-known for his contributions to mapmaking during the early 18th century. He established himself as one of the leading map publishers in Germany and produced a significant number of maps and atlases.
One of Homann's notable works is the map titled "Planiglobii Terrestris cum Utroq Hemisphaerio Caelesti Generalis Exhibitio," which was published in 1707. The map is often referred to as the Homann Planisphere or Homann's World Map.
The Homann Planisphere is a large double-hemisphere map that combines both celestial and terrestrial representations. It features detailed and artistic depictions of the world as known at the time, including continents, countries, cities, rivers, mountains, and other geographical features. The map also incorporates astronomical elements, such as constellations, zodiac signs, and celestial figures.
Homann's map was created during a period when European explorers were expanding their knowledge of the world through voyages and discoveries. While it reflects the understanding of geography and astronomy at that time, it may not accurately represent modern scientific knowledge or the accurate shape and size of continents.
The Homann Planisphere, like many other maps from that era, served both decorative and educational purposes. It aimed to provide viewers with a comprehensive view of the world and the heavens, combining geographical and astronomical information. The map's artistic style, vibrant colors, and ornamental elements also contributed to its appeal.
